Built from 1472 till 1492, the original Bell Tower was twice struk by lightning in 1574 and 1608. On the 8th of September 1768 a hurricane damaged further the construction. By 1823 the invention of Mr CHAPPE, (a telegraph) was installed on the platform (see photograph). It was only in 1865 that the Bell Tower was repaired and the Bell Spire rebuilt as it is today.
